House Hit by a Car 8/26/05   8/26/05   Yes, that's right, the house was hit by a car. I got a call from one of my tenants that I should come over because a car crashed into the house. Turns out some young, drunk girl had stolen a car, was driving very fast down the alley, hit a pair of dumpsters, crashed through the privacy fence, hit the side of the house and came to a stop in the side yard. She got out of the car and took off. A neighbor managed to chase her but lost her in the dark a few blocks away. The car missed the gas meter by just a few feet. It could have been much worse.
Galapago 3-Plex 12/27/01     In August 1999, Shelly and I bought a rental property with the intent of developing the lot at a later date. Well that time has come and the old house is gone and the new three unit townhouse is under way. We plan to move into one unit and rent the other two. This should be a pictorial of the demolition and construction.
Our First Child 4/1/01     Daniel Robert Maddy was born on December 21, 2001. He was 7 1/2 lbs and 20" long.
Our Furry Friends     Various pictures of our cats and dogs
Flying: Air shows, fly-ins, and flying trips
Soaring Villa Grove 11/10/07   11/10/07   Seven months after driving for some pilots at Villa Grove I was able to fly there myself. After an extended sled ride we went back up and caught a great glass off. I was able to get above the main ridge 4,000' above launch. The views were amazing - much better than the pictures show.
Willow Creek Hang Gliding 9/8/07   9/8/07   The weekend after the Crawfords I was able to get an hour long flight in at Willow Creek near Gunnison Colorado.
Hang Gliding at the Crawfords 8/29/07   9/3/07   I spend Labor Day weekend at the Crawfords in Utah. I got three great flights. Lots of other pilots were there. We all had fun flying, camping, and hang waiting.
Hang Gliding at Villa Grove 4/15/07   4/15/07   I volunteered to drive for John, Fred, and B.J. while they got to soar. B.J. made it about 15,000 feet MSL and was aloft for 3 hours. Great day of flying and beautiful views.
Petaluma to San Francisco 11/5/06   11/5/06   Paul Werner was kind enough to give me a ride in his Long-EZ out of Petaluma, California. We flew along the coast just south of San Francisco to Half Moon Bay. I got a great view of the bay area. Unfortunately the batteries went dead in my camera just as we got to the Golden Gate bridge while heading south.
Rough River 2006 9/28/06   10/1/06   I flew to Rough River again but first made a stop near St. Louis to visit the Cozy Girrls. If you ever get the chance, stop by and say Hi. They have some neat toys in addition to their amazing Cozy project.
Denver - Shiprock - Montrose 6/17/06   6/17/06   I flew from Centennial (KAPA) down to Farmington (KFMN). Then off to see Shiprock. We then flew up to Montrose (KMTJ) for lunch. Finally back to Centennial. George came along for the ride and took way too many pictures.
Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Black Hills, Devil's Tower 2/26/06   2/26/06   Flew up to South Dakota and Wyoming for a sight seeing trip. Flew around Mount Rushmore and over the Badlands before heading to Rapid City for fuel and lunch. After that we flew over the Black Hills to Devil's Tower then back to Denver.
Aspen Tree Tour of Colorado 10/8/05   10/8/05   A week or two late but it was time to get in a mountain tour of Colorado to see the changing Aspen trees. While we saw a lot of bare trees we did find one area with a lot of gold. The route was from Centennial, Kenosha Pass, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Glenwood Springs, Eagle, Kremmling, Winter Park, and back to Centennial. About 3.5 hours and 360 miles.
Rough River 2005 9/29/05   10/2/05   This year I flew the club's Diamond Star to Rough River. I had a wonderful trip. I put 17.7 hours on the Hobbs between the trip there and back and some flying around while there. Mike Beasley and I flew some formation flying with his Cherokee for some inflight pictures and video - that was really fun.
Sightseeing Flight: Denver to Steamboat 9/11/05   9/11/05   Today was a beautiful day in Colorado for flying in the moutains. I took the Diamond Star up with George and Letta. We left Centennial and headed to Steamboat via Corona Pass, Kremmling, and Rabbit Ear's Pass. After a short stay at Steamboat we took off and head back toward Kremmling via a different valley then headed south toward Dillon. We could see Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain ski areas all at once. We flew south over Hoosier pass, made left in South Park and followed highway 285 over Kenosha Pass back to the Front Range. Strangely there was a 35K wind at 14K feet but it was mostly smooth. The only area of turbulance was mild chop going over Hoosier Pass.
Mountain Checkout Flight 8/28/05   8/28/05   After an all day Mountain Flying ground school hosted by the Colorado Pilot's Association I did the practical flight. The flight started from Centennial (APA) and went to Kremmling (20v) to Glennwood Springs (GWS) to Aspen (ASE) to Leadville (LXV) and back to Centennial. It was a beautiful day and the flight was great. I flew the Diamond Star and put 4.0 hours on the hobbs.
Airventure 2005 7/25/05   7/30/05   Another wonderful trip to Oshkosh for the big show. I stayed with Mark Beduhn and his family for the week - thanks Mark. I was able to fly right seat in Mark's Cozy IV for the "Glass Overcast" mass arrival of canards on Monday the 25th. We arrived as a group of 33 canards from Fond Du Lac into Oshkosh a few hours before White Knight and SpaceShipOne.
Taos New Mexico 7/16/05   7/16/05   A trip down to Taos from Centennial with George and Leta Barta.
Diamond Star flight from KAPA to Sand Dunes National Monument 7/4/05   7/4/05   I got checked out yesterday in the club's new Diamond Star (DA40) with full dual G1000 panel. I took Daniel and Shelly up for a ride from Centennial (KAPA) down the front range, over La Veta pass, around Blanca Peak (a 14'er) to Sand Dunes National Monument. This was Daniel's first ride in a small plane. He was quite enthused to start but I guess he got a bit bored.
Rough River 2004 10/1/04   10/3/04   The annual Central State Association (CSA) Canard fly-in at the Rough River Dam state park in Kentucky. This year there were 72 canards (a new record).
Airventure 2004 7/24/04   7/31/04   This year I was able to ride with Marc Zeitlin in his Cozy to Oshkosh. We flew from Greeley with Lee Devlin (in his Long-EZ). We spent the night in Waterloo, IA and flew to Oshkosh the next day with Lee, Norm Muzzy, and Curt Smith (both in Cozy Mk IVs). I spent the week looking at lots of planes and even got to talk with Burt Rutan and Mike Melvill next to the Starship they flew in!

Airventure 2003 8/1/03   8/3/03   The big EAA airshow/flyin in Oshkosh, WI.
A Day of Hang Gliding 6/28/03   6/28/03   I haven't flown a hang glider in several years but I tagged along with a friend for the day.
Long-EZ Flight 3/15/03   3/15/03   Ian Huss was kind enough to give me a ride in his Long-EZ homebuilt experimental aircraft. It was a beautiful afternoon in the mountains of Colorado. We took off from Longmont Vance Brand (2V2) and flew down to Golden to see if any of the local hang glider pilots were out (Ian and I are both former hang glider pilots). We hooked a thermal and gained several thousand feet in it while circling at idle power - what a rush. We then flew over the divide - that's the continental divide - toward the ski resort of Winter Park. Ian's wife was ski patrolling that day so we flew overhead to say hi. We then headed back east over Rocky Mountain National Park and flew by Long's peak - one the many peaks over 14,000 high in Colorado and very close to the front range. This is my first flight in a Long EZ. All the pictures were taken from the back seat of this two seat airplane. Thanks Ian for a great day!

Copperstate EAA Fly-in 2000 10/14/00   10/15/00   Shelly and I rented a Cessna 182 and flew from Denver to Phoenix to attend the Copperstate fly-in at William's Gateway (IWA). It took about 6 hours plus a quick rest stop at Sante Fe (SAF).

We couldn't have had better weather. Visibility was at least 60 miles all the way down with just a few small (airplane sized) cumulus clouds here and there. The trip back was about the same though there was a lot of haze when we got back to the front range of Colorado.

Below are pictures I took going to and while at the fly-in.

A Day of Flying 12/12/99   12/12/99   James Iry and I rented a Cessna 172 from Centennial Airport south of Denver. We flew over my house then headed north. It was a beautiful, calm day. We were surprised at how little traffic there was on such a great day. The pictures include shots of Long's peak, Boulder, Denver, and Centennial.
Radio Control Airplanes 5/1/88     I started building radio control airplanes in the late 80's. I started with a Carl Goldberg Eaglet 50 trainer. I then built two Vector II pattern planes from RCModeler plans. Then I built a Great Planes Kaos 40 kit which I sold in '93 after moving to Colorado and officially gave up the hobby. In late 2007 I got the bug again and started building a Sig Kadet Senior trainer.
Some Older Hang Gliding Photos 11/11/86   5/15/96   Here are a bunch of hang gliding pictures I scanned in. Pictures include an impromptu trip to Kitty Hawk Kites in the fall of 1986 for my first hang gliding experience, my Hang 2 flight test in 1993 and a bunch of other pictures taken in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Most are at Williams Peak near Heeney CO. A few are from the Point of the Mountain near Draper UT.
Details of a Cessna 172     I soloed in this C-172. These are detailed pictures I took because I wanted to build a scale model of it. I may finish it someday, maybe.
Travel: Business trips and vacations
Daniel and I in Toronto 8/10/07   8/15/07   I took Daniel on a little vacation to Toronto. We stayed at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto. Day 1 - Toronto Zoo. Day 2 - Niagara Falls. Day 3 - Ontario Science Centre. Day 4 - Ontario Place. Day 5 - CN Tower.
San Francisco 11/4/06   11/10/06   I went to San Francisco on a business trip. I left a bit early so I would have the weekend to sight see. Saturday I did a lot of walking and rented a bicycle. I rode all through Golden Gate Park, along the coast, and across the Golden Gate bridge. Then back and through the Presidio and down to the marina. Sunday I was lucky enough to get a plane ride with Paul Werner in his Long-EZ. All the pictures are from the weekend.
Alta Ski Trip 3/28/05   4/1/05   I met up with Uncle Al and some others for a great week of skiing at Alta, Utah. We had over 5 feet of snow this week and Alta had a record base of over 200" while we were there. Outstanding! Of course there was too much of a good thing. We got stuck in the lodge for an entire day because there was too much snow.
Air and Space Museum 12/29/02   12/29/02   After ten years in Colorado I made my first trip back to the Washington D.C. area and of course I had to make a visit to the Air and Space museum.
Business Trip to Maracaibo, Venezuela 3/31/02   4/7/02   I was sent to Maracaibo Venezuela for a week long business trip. While the city itself isn't very nice from a tourists point of view, the people are very friendly. In fact, of all the business trips I've done, these people were by far the nicest. It is difficult traveling alone to a foreign country, especially when I don't speak the local language (Spanish). The group I visited was very helpful. They went out of their way to help me out. I was invited along for lunch and dinner. I was even invited to a company picnic. I know a lot more Spanish now than I did (though still not very much).
Toronto Trip 6/12/01   6/13/01   I spent a week in Toronto, Ontario on a business trip in June of 2001.

Below are pictures I took near and from the CN Tower. This is about the tallest building in the world. The upper observation deck is the highest in the world. You can see a sign showing the height in one of the pictures.

Sweden Trip 11/1/00   11/10/00   I spent a week and a half in Sweden on a business trip in November 2000. I spent the first few days rooming in Gävle and working in Älvkarleby. The remainder of the trip was in Stockholm.

Below are pictures I took while on the trip. I experimented with longer exposure settings on my digital camera for the evening and night pictures. Some are a bit blurry since I didn't have a tripod.

European Honeymoon 9/16/98   10/15/98   We spent a full month traveling around Europe by train.
Outdoors: Hiking and camping trips
Devil's Tower 10/22/04   10/23/04   John Wilber and I spent a weekend camping near Devil's Tower. Our campsite had a great view of the tower. We arrived in the evening and I took a lot of night shots against a clear star filled sky. We spent the next day hiking and climbing around the tower.
