I spent a good part of the weekend detailing and setting up my Cozy Project in Microsoft Project. I’ve uploaded it in zipped form below. Email me if you want the latest version. I tried to incorporate what I have learned regarding cost, size and scope and have incorporated information from the web pages of other builders.

One area that seems to be a little grey is the whole avionics thing. There doesn’t seem to be many good how-to resources for setting up the instrument panel. I would like to have IFR capability at some point and want to plan my initial panel for that growth. I  did find a forum on http://www.canardaviation.com/forum/ that may have some resources.

The project plan is useful for managing and documenting the time and money spent against an initial baseline. It also makes an efficient repository for details on my build log. I’ve included a resource map that includes all the parts, part numbers and estimated prices. I’ve associated each of these parts with the respective chapter or task listed in the gantt Chart. If  a price or task duration changes it automatically updates the whole project plan. Later I’ll also include a quick reference Gantt chart like many of the other builders that includes weight, build time and cost for each section.

After reviewing engine options from jets to Mazda Rotaries to Diesels to 6 cyl Franklins, and 8 cyl Jubs. I’m settled on the Lycoming 0-320. I’m considering the smaller engine because range is more important to me than climb rate or speed. I suspect I’ll still get 165 kias in cruse which is darn good. I can always upgrade later if I want, it seems like that engine has a healthy aftermarket. If you have experience with this engine and can provide any information to copare a Cozy Range with the 0-360 vs. O-320 I would enjoy hearing from you.

I read about some scary stuff with the old Vari-Eze on the Rutan website regarding corrosion on the aluminum mounts that is causing some structural failures. Here’s the link if you’re interested.
