Chapter 4

Building Bulkheads

I started this section in January of 1998 in my basement as my garage was not heated. As I write this 8.7 years later it is hard to believe it took so long to do this simple work. But that is the design of the plans to have you make simple parts and do simple glass work to gain the experience you need to build the later chapters.

First thing that I built was the seatback. I used the overall plan form for the seat back but did not make all the cutouts. I then glassed the front side IAW plans schedule. After the seatback was completed I made the cut outs. I did this so the glass was supported during the lay-ups.

When building F22, F28 and the lading gear bulkheads I cut the foam oversized, marked the cut lines then glassed. After cure I cut to size. (NOTE: use Bi-metal blades when cutting fiberglass as it will just knock the teeth off wood blades.) (NOTE: when glassing the epoxy will smear the maker lines so it best to remark them prior to cutting)

The Instrument panel was done different from the plans on the advice of Vance Atkins. I did not use the 0.2 inch foam behind the panel. What I did was lay peel ply over the foam then glass the panel with the following schedule to end up with approximately 1/8 thickness in glass. Additional glass is X plies unidirectional and X plies bidirectional alternating. Also I did not install the top stiffener.
