Information Section

This section is for tools and tips I have used while building.

Tools:

Band saw table top Craftsman
Band saw freestanding Craftsman
Fien-Multi tool fixed speed
Dermal: with flex drive, router base, sanding drum bits, and cutting/router type bits.
Clamps: Spring type, quick grip and C-clamps all of various sizes.
Electric Scissors
Aluminum striate edges

Tips:

Peel-Ply: I use peel-ply for all my lay-ups for a couple of reasons. The area is mostly prepared for the next lay-up; some sanding is still required to dull the area. Sanding a peel-plied area is much easier to dull than strait glass. Also the weave is leveled out with epoxy, there are augments about weight here some think it adds weight I don’t. I like stippling the peel-ply down using the epoxy that is in the lay-up to wet it out, adding epoxy only to wet out areas that are dry.

SAFETY:

USE GLOVES!!!! Use chemical gloves over cotton inserts, and Nitral gloves for small lay-ups. Here are the reasons why there are two types of people using epoxy, those who have reactions to epoxy and those who will. This stuff is a Sensitizer meaning that over time everyone will develop a reaction to it, so take precautions. Also use the Nitral gloves for sanding fresh cured glass. When sanding you will get fine glass fibers on your hands, and I have found that I get bad reactions to it if the glass is fresh. What I think happens is that the epoxy is cured but not fully, the glass fibers stick the skin and the epoxy warms up by body heat, when this happens the epoxy to goes back to curing state which allows the hardener to cause a burn. At least that is what I think is happening. So now I use gloves to sand which seams to be working.
