Chapter
14: Main spar

In this chapter we build and install the main spar. A
jig is built on the table to provide support for the foam and to
keep all the angles correct. There really is nothing too
difficult or new here assuming you have delt with spar cap tape before.
In the pic above this one you can see a slight mismatch between the LXY and the main
spar. Also, the plans have you put a bevel on the entire forward bottom
of the spar, I think if I were to do it again I would stop the bevel
just as it goes inbord of the tub. I will have to use a lot of flox to
fill this. Later note: this bevel later proved no to ba any big deal, not much of it gets taped.
As of Spring 2007 this chapter is on hold, I have
the wings done now and sometime this summer I will finish the chapter
by installing the spar into the tub. I want to ensure everything inside
the tub is complete as possible because once the spar is installed
it will be difficult to flip the tub and putting it on it's side will
be a thing of the past.
Feb 2009: The spar has been installed, chapter 14 is now complete.
I had moved on to chapter 18 and wanted to install the
turtleback. This is contrary to the plans but is the way many go so they
can do more work before putting in the spar. So once it is installed
there are a few miserable hours spent upside down in the back seat
taping the spar and upper engine mount reinforcements. This is
challenging work, sometimes I was litterally upside down BID taping
with a mirror in my mouth. Perhaps you can get a visual on that and
appreciated why I didn't get any pics.
