Project Status 6-16-09: Is it June already? I worked on the plane this weekend after a 4-month hiatus. I spread some "ice" (blending compound) on the headrests and shoulder support to hide some bumps and bruises. I'm in the process of sanding that out now. My goal is still the same, and that is to have the interior primed and painted by the end of summer. Not sure how I'm going to do that since I'm going to deploy to the White Sands Missile Range in August for six months to support the pad abort test for my other homebuilt project.
The picture on the left was taken to show the filling and sanding I was doing on the headrests and the shoulder support structure on the seatback. The picture on the right shows one of two ribs that I floxed in, front-to-back, along the nose cone access hole. The ribs keep the nose cone from flexing, which happens anytime you push on a screwdriver to remove/install the screws for the nose cone cover. The pre-fabricated Featherlite nose cone has no core to it. It's just a few plies of fiberglass. So it tends to flex anytime you push on it. The ribs stop the flexing and will hopefully prevent the paint from cracking over time.
