Chapter 14 - Step 10

This step involves attaching the spar to the fuselage.

Test Fitting Spar August 7, 2006. Here's the spar after lots of test fitting. It is now level, square, plump, and whatever other terms apply. The bottom of the spar is about 0.2" above the top of the lower firewall. After a few emails with the builders list it was deemed just fine this way.

Test Fitting Spar August 7, 2006. Here is the spar cutout area. You can see the foam has been removed from the LWX so the BID tapes will go from spar to wood and not foam. I don't like how the foam has been cut away along the front of the spar. Oh well.

Bulkhead Gap August 7, 2006. You can that the top of the angled gear bulkhead came up a bit short. Again I queried the masses and everyone said I can leave it or fill with flox while taping the joint.

Spar on Longeron August 7, 2006. The spar is wedged up against the upper longeron. A builder or two have reported getting the spar just perfect but resting at the bottom of the cutout instead at the correct waterline. That can cause issues later when building the strakes.

Wide View August 7, 2006. A wide shot of the fuselage with the canard and spar in place. It's starting to look like a plane finally.

Install Prep August 8, 2006. Sanded all around spar were it will be mated to the fuselage.

Engine Mount August 13, 2006. Here is one of the EM-2 installed on the firewall.

Spar Floxed In August 13, 2006. Lots of flox holding in the spar. The spar has been put in place such that the spar is up as high as it can go against the bottom of the upper longerons.

Spar Floxed In August 13, 2006. Even more flox under the spar to fill the gap. Again, the spar is raised up against the upper longeron.

Spar Floxed In August 13, 2006. The top of the angled portion of the front landing gear bulkhead came up a bit short. The gap is simply filled with flox. Just prior to taping the rest of this will be filled with more flox.

Spar Taped In August 20, 2006. Adding the three tapes between the spar and firewall was "interesting". Since I had already done the controls I had to ensure I didn't tape over the brass bushing. I also covered all the screws and bushings with tape to keep epoxy and flox off of them. I still need to add the three tapes outboard of LWX.

Spar Taped In August 20, 2006. More tapes holding in the spar.
