I don't think you give your app enough credit, since you just pitch it as a way to find out what's on your TiVos while you're at home. If you do the right port forwarding, you can even check your TiVo Now Playing status from anywhere over EDGE/3G.

Just port forward TCP traffic for port 443 from your external IP (e.g. 123.45.67.89) to your TiVo's internal IP and then add 123.45.67.89:443 (in this example) as the DVR network address.

Depending on your router's port forwarding abilities, you can pick a different external port to forward to 443 on the internal network. This way, you can even contact multiple TiVos behind the same router. I do this right now on my Airport Extreme.

If you don't have a static external IP, you can use DNS hostnames too in conjunction with a service like dyndns.com.

Thanks for posting this information. While I have been doing this myself since I wrote the application, I don't think it's something a majority of the users would be in a position to configure. But for those that can, you are correct, it really makes this application even more useful.
